During the months of January through March, juvenile Chinook salmon gather to feed on the ample supply of needlefish, anchovy, crab larvae and herring as they begin to bulk up for their journeys further out to sea. During this period they are actively feeding, and will aggressively pursue your tackle. When winter salmon fishing in Sooke for Chinook it’s not unusual to see double headers on a regular basis. These juvenile fish compete for food and can take your action to the next level. This means lots of action on the rods and no shortage of exitement. When winter salmon fishing in Sooke for Chinook, expect the average fish size between 6 – 12 pounds. This makes them the perfect size for the BBQ, smoker, or canning.

Winter halibut fishing occurs at a time when the larger female halibut make their way from deep to shallower water to spawn. And where female halibut are gathering male fish will follow. Your guide will set an anchor in 200 – 300 feet of water and drop your gear in the water.

Halibut have an attraction to scent and vibration. Your success or failure can be determined by the strength of the tides and the weather, so timing is everything. Action is slower than in the summer, but if you are lucky and patient, you can catch halibut. When on the anchor its a good time for some crib, some food/drink while you settle in and wait. You never know when a “Barn Door” will grab your gear and take you for a ride.
